It was my first day in high school. Something about the new building, the new uniform, demanded me to stand out among my classmates. I came upon the perfect opportunity in my History class, when the teacher asked: “Who was Juan Vicente Gómez?” I remembered my sister’s old, witty notes, where she had drawn the dictator who had wielded power for the longest time in Venezuela along with the tagline father of ice creams. I didn’t hesitate: “He brought ice cream to Venezuela!”. The only thing I managed to do that day was becoming the little soup of the class.

Era mi primer día en bachillerato. Algo del nuevo edificio, del nuevo uniforme, me exigía destacarme entre mis demás compañeros. La oportunidad perfecta se presentó en la clase de Historia, cuando la profesora preguntó: “¿Quién fue Juan Vicente Gómez?” Recordé nítidamente los viejos y ocurrentes apuntes de mi hermana para la misma materia, donde había dibujado al dictador que por más tiempo ha permanecido en el poder en Venezuela con la nota: “Juan Vicente Gómez, papá de los helados”. No titubeé: ”¡Él trajo el helado a Venezuela!”. Lo único que logré ese día fue convertirme en la sopita del salón.
